Biography

Dr. Nemec grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a BA in chemistry. He obtained his MD degree from The Ohio State University. He then entered the US Navy for a 20 year career, eventually obtaining the rank of Captain. During his naval career, he did his internship, medical residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the Naval Medical Center Bethesda. He also had tours at the Naval Academy, Naval Hospital Guam, and Naval Hospital Portsmouth. Also, he had four months of post-fellowship specialized training in hepatology (liver diseases) at the Medical College of Virginia. In the last six years of his career in the US Navy, he was the Chair of the Division of Gastroenterology. He also had served on multiple medical staff committees and was a recognized expert on health care quality (both at individual and corporate level). His medical and military honors include the Defense meritorious service medal, Navy commendation medal (two awards) as well as election to the AOA honorary medical society.

After completing his naval career, he started a second career at Winchester Gastroenterology Associates. As a member of the medical staff at Winchester Medical Center, he currently serves on the Physician Performance Committee, which reviews the performance of physicians in health care delivery. With a passion for health care quality, his clinical interests include colorectal cancer prevention, liver diseases, reflux disease, and functional bowel disease. He is board certified in both internal medicine and gastroenterology. He is a member of the AGA, ACG, and ASGE.
