Dr. Sears was born and raised in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. His family moved to Eugene, Oregon after he completed elementary school. He graduated from Lewis & Clark College in Portland, Oregon with a BS in biology, where he participated in football and track. Dr. Sears then received a MSPH in medical parasitology from the School of Public Health at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He provided public health with regards to enteric pathogens to migrant farm workers in eastern NC. During this time he was also involved with epidemiology studies looking into early detection of colon cancer. He then obtained his MD from Wake Forest University and training in Internal Medicine at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and Gastroenterology and Hepatology at The University of Virginia. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

During medical school and post-graduate training, Dr. Sears was involved in a number of clinical research projects that resulted in a number of presentations and publications. He came to Winchester in 1997. As a member of the medical staff at Winchester Medical Center, Dr. Sears is the Chairman of the Investigative Review Board which reviews all ongoing research studies at WMC to make sure they are safe and ethical to participating patients. Dr. Sears enjoys all topics in Gastroenterology and Hepatology, but has a particular interest in therapeutic endoscopy. He is trained and experienced in: A number of ablation and removal techniques including BARRX to treat Barrett’s esophagus, and EMR (endoscopic mucosal resection); Dilations; Stenting; Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). He is a member of the ACG, AGA and ASGE.
